Sirius Cup Regatta
March 20 @ 4:30 PM – March 22 @ 5:00 PM
The Sirius Cup Regatta is a chance for Scouts, Venturers and Leaders to get together with other Scouts at a camp based primarily around water activities. The Scout Groups camp on Balmoral Oval, just a hop, skip and a jump from the waters of Middle Harbour as a tent city comes to life from Friday afternoon. In the past years we have had Scouts from many distant places including interstate, Lake Burley Griffin and Lake Tuggeranong both from the ACT, Belmont North and 1st Woy Woy from up north, Penrith from the west and Gerringong from down south.
History
The Regatta is named after the oldest New South Wales Sea Scout headquarters in Mosman Bay which was formerly known as Port Sirius, which was named after the HMS Sirius, flagship of the First Fleet. The Regatta is the largest and oldest regatta on the Scout calendar and is now in its 72nd year.
Activities
The main event on Saturday morning is the canoe regatta for the Scout, Venturer, and Rover sections (along with their leaders). Don’t worry if your Group doesn’t have canoes as we are running a pool system. If you have some plastic type canoes, then bring them along and add to the pool.
In the afternoon the main events are the sailing races, split into 5 divisions to separate the small from the large and the extra large. While the races are in action those not participating have some free time and can walk to Rocky Point and watch the sailing, jump in for a swim at the Balmoral Baths (free admission) or use their own canoes. The Regatta has provided a slip ‘n’ slide for the landlubbers to use. If any one has some other great ideas for those left on the land please let the Regatta Coordinator know, especially of you have some one who wants to help run the afternoon activities. Saturday evening is a time to sit around and chat with the other Scouts, play some ball games on what is left of the oval or watch a movie on the oval (or 1st Balmoral Hall if the weather turns wet).
Sunday morning is all action with the Sirius Iron Man event kicking off (or running off) at 7:00am. The best placed Group overall in these events is awarded the Sirius Iron Group Trophy. This is followed by the rowing events and then at 8:45am it’s time for the Cub canoeing events. Similar to the Saturday morning events, these are open to all Cub Scouts and their leaders. This is always a great event for the Scouts to watch or to even help their own Cub Pack. The second round of sailing takes place mid to late morning.
