Mental Health First Aid

2023-02-04 @ 8:30 AM 2023-02-05 @ 5:00 PM

MHFA courses teach members of the public how to provide initial help to a person who is
developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health
problem or in a mental health crisis. The mental health “first aid” is given until appropriate
professional help is received, or the crisis resolves.

This course is designed for Leaders and Rovers who work with youth members who may approach
you with mental health problems. The Sydney North First Aid Team has found recently after the
COVID 19 lockdowns that some Scouts are having problems dealing with being away from their
families, friends and home on overnight camps and activities such as Dragon Skin and ScoutHike.
The aim is for 15 to 20 Leaders to get a good cross-section of ideas for group discussions. At the
last Dragon Skin, the First Aid team found that about half of the treatments in First Aid were
dealing with mental problems. The course is very popular, and you will very likely find the course
and material highly useful in your scouting duties and your own personal development.

This course was designed by Mental Health First Aid Australia and is delivered by the Scouts NSW
Team (Anthony Pritchard & Wendy White) and so the course has Scouting experience through it.
There is also an accreditation process if you wish.
