Canoeing is available to all members, with specific requirements applied to the Joey Section.

Most suitable during spring to early autum, Meeting Nights (in daylight), Day Trips and Weekends
Skils Development Events
The Region provides Flat Water Canoeing training that cater for everyone from Safe Participant to Guide. These training events are provided in two formats – just choose the format that suits and interests you the best. As a pre-requisite, all participants must be able to swim 50 metres.
Single Weekend Canoe Skills Development Events
These weekends cater for Scouts, Venturers, Rovers and Leaders. Over the weekend, participants will take part in 8 hours of paddling, stroke technique, a mini-expedition, rescues, capsize drills but most importantly, they’ll have a fantastic weekend in the water! Usually canoeing qualifications up to Level 2 are achievable on these training events.
It is preferable for participants to supply canoes, however, canoes can be provided on request to the Leader/Guide prior to the weekend.
Double Weekend Canoe Skills Development Events (North Harbour Water Base)
These double weekend training events are aimed at Scouts, Venturers (who can be accompanied by their Leaders) and adult Leaders. These training events aim to achieve Trained Participant canoe qualification for participants with some able to achieve a components of Assistant Guide and Guide canoe qualification. Youth members can complete the technical requirements for OAS stages 3 and 4 along with some components of stage 5. The first weekend is held at Manly Dam and covers paddling, stroke technique, rescues, and capsize drills with the second weekend being a Canoe Camp at Brisbane Water.

Prerequisites
For all canoe training events, a prerequisite is that participants must be able to swim 50 metres.
Cub Scout Canoe Activities (North Harbour Water Base)
The Cub Scout Canoe activity day is aimed at achieving the technical components of OAS Padding Stage 1, although it does cover parts of Stage 2. We have a briefing and skills session before morning tea and then paddle to the other end of the lake, for lunch, and then return to Jamieson Park. For the paddling journey it’s helpful to have a leader/parent or youth member 2 -up OAS paddling supporting in each canoe to assist steering/power. BYO Morning tea and lunch. Each Cub scout that participants earn a fellowship camp blanket badge.

Joey Scout Canoe Activities (North Harbour Water Base)
The Joey Scout Canoe activity day is aimed at OAS Padding Stage 1. We have a quick briefing on dry land after lifejackets fitting the Joey Scouts are unleashed on the water for some fun in the sun. Joey’ scouts must have a leader/parent or youth member 2 -up OAS supporting in each canoe to help with steering/power. Each Joey scout that participants earns a camp blanket badge.
