As the first Moot of 2017, this makes a great start to the year! All the details are at http://www.facebook.com/events/1736074376663295/ _________________________________________________________________________ SURFMOOT Victoria’s huge annual Surfmoot is held at Eumeralla Scout Camp, near Anglesea over Australia Day and the following weekend. This is always a Rover event not to be missed, particularly straight after a national Moot, which usually swells the numbers. Why not get all your Crew together for a road trip south? All the details are at http://www.facebook.com/events/1746737358912078/ _________________________________________________________________________ GOT AN IDEA FOR AN ADVENTURE? A reminder that applications for the Tony Balthasar Achievement Award must be submitted by the February 12th RRC meeting. The Balthasar Award is available only to Rovers from our Region. This award is currently valued in the order of $6,000 and presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for any Rover. By tradition, the Award covers the cost of a trip to Europe including a stay at Baden-Powell House in London and a climbing course at Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland, however past recipients have travelled to all corners of the globe to undertake some amazing adventures, from dog-sledding in Sweden, to mountaineering in Peru, trekking in India and cycling in Vietnam. If you leave Moot Against Humanity with your faith in humanity intact, then we've clearly failed at our job! Details at http://www.facebook.com/events/1606291689665434/ Now’s the time to start getting ALL your Crew’s feeder Venturer Units revved-up about Roventure – make sure it’s on their Unit’s calendar - and plan a combined night to get planning around the theme. _________________________________________________________________________ NEW ZEALAND NATIONAL MOOT Every Easter a crowd of Australian Rovers head across the ditch - join the Australian Contingent to this year’s New Zealand Moot for a Big Bang! The New Zealand Moot runs from Thursday the 13th to Monday the 17th of April 2017 with an optional pre-tour running from the 8th. The pre-tour will visit Rotorua and Taupo. Typical activities include: ● Service project - take part in a fun community project. ● Tour/major activity day - spend the day off-site on one of a number of adventurous tours with which to challenge yourself; or take it easy and spend the day on a relaxing tour instead. ● Costume parties - Each night there is a themed costume party with live bands, DJs or other entertainment. ● Shooting Trophy - Spend the afternoon at different bases, completing interesting challenges and fun games, as you compete for the prestigious Shooting Trophy. ● Sporting events - Compete in some sporting events including a cross-country and a tug-o war. Full details have been sent to all Crew Leaders and RAs. * Quality Rovering Award Are you a quality Rover Crew? If so, you’ll easily meet the standards for this award. Be acknowledged by your peers and recognised as a quality Crew. Nominations must be endorsed by the RRC Chair and RC-Rovers and submitted to the BRC by February 4th. If your Crew doesn’t meet the criteria this year, why plan to work towards them over the next year. See http://nsw.rovers.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Quality-Rovering-Award-Form.pdf * Adult Recognition Awards These awards are for people in leadership roles, to acknowledge outstanding service. Nominations close on February 3rd. Please discuss with your Crew Leader. * Stan Bales Rover Service Award This prestigious award recognises a Rover, Leader or other supporter for outstanding and sustained service specifically to the Rover section in NSW. This requires a minimum of 5 years in key roles for a Rover, or 10 years for an RA or other supporter. Any nomination must be kept strictly secret from the nominee. Nominations close at the BRC meeting on February 4th. Please contact Nick Buchner (RC-Rovers) to discuss suitability of any potential nomination. _________________________________________________________________________ ROVER RESOLUTIONS FOR 2017 What are your Rover-related resolutions for the coming year? What are you planning to do in 2017 that's new, challenging, different, better? How’d you go in 2016 with the list below? Every Rover owes it to themselves to experience as many of these opportunities as possible.... so if it didn't happen in 2016, why not make 2017 the year to... * do a roadtrip with a few (or all!) of your Crew * grow your Crew - convince at least two mates to join Rovers * attend a Moot (yes, there are Rovers out there who haven't!) * (better still) commit to getting to the 15th World Moot in Iceland in July * get the whole Crew to dress up for the Rover Ball * instigate a local community service project for your Crew * become fully invested... if you aren't already * if you're a Sponsor, get at least two of your Squires/Trainees invested! * ski at the Bogong Rover Chalet * take on an office bearer position in your Crew, or RRC or BRC * get an activity qualification (eg. abseiling, climbing, canyoning, caving, bushwalking, canoeing) * start planning a major Crew expedition... overseas or interstate * experience a major interstate Rover event (eg. Mudbash, Surfmoot, Banana Bash, MARB etc.) * collect more food than anyone else for the Hike for Hunger * do some Rover leadership training * put on a fun activity night for every local Cub Pack and Scout Troop in the Groups around you * organise an inter-Crew challenge or activity night... with another Crew you don't know well * hike or camp in two National Parks you've never visited before Make 2017 a great year for your Rovering and your Crew... make the most of the opportunities on offer. Rovering is what you make of it – and great Rovering will leave you with incredible experiences that last a lifetime... it's up to you! _________________________________________________________________________ SCOUT HIKE Scout Hike is a nice wind-down after Dragon Skin, only over one weekend so no time having to be taken off work. All activities are organised for you, all you have to do is turn up with some of the allocated gear, chill out and have fun with the Scouts! Theme: “Historical Adventures” with our Sleep Point’s theme being “Ancient Egypt”. When: 5-7 May 2017 Cost: $60 which includes all food and Scout Hike fees. Registrations open 1st February Help is still needed for Sleep Point 6 - the Rover base - we are looking for 3 activity leaders in particular and a few minor Sleep Point staff roles. Please don't hesitate to contact Jamie on 0400 581 365 if you are interested to support this event for tomorrow’s Rovers. _________________________________________________________________________ KANDERSTEG - BE A PINKIE! Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland offers amazing short-term staff opportunities for Rover-aged Scouts from all over the world. Surrounded by alpine peaks, it’s a magic place.
