This year, a reasonably large number of NSW Rovers made the trip, joining hundreds from around Australia. Anthony "Buckles" Buckley tells more... What a weekend! After my Crew drove through the night before, we got to the camp site and were surprised at how bloody cold it was – and it was only 7pm! With the assistance of car head lights we set up our tents, started the car with a flat battery (how embarrassing) and in no time most of the 25 Sydney North attendees had commandeered a nearby fire and made ourselves at home around it. Over the next two days we got to watch some weird and wacky contraptions - including Brush Park's "Black Betty" - go round in circles, up hills and even flip onto their roofs (unfortunately that wasn’t an official event), then at night watch the Motorkhana and a tug-o-war. All the while we were able to share body heat with new friends (including some South Australians who didn’t mind we’d stolen their fire) and share drinks with old mates. The Monday came round too soon and we scraped the ice off the top of the eski (it was probably warmer in it than out of it), packed the snap-frozen fly away and made our way home - with a side trip to Bonnie Doon of "The Castle" fame. I know I am looking forward to the winter sales so I can buy some more warm clothes in preparation for next year! Buckles Epping Rover Crew __________________________________________________________________________ B-P AWARD PROJECT - STUFF NEEDED For my project badge for my B-P, I'm designing and building a bushwalkers hut at Pennant Hills Scout Camp using Scouting methods and all recycled materials, and I want to know if any Rovers out there could donate a few bits and pieces I need. I'm sure there are a few Crews that would have these things lying around/ or work in a field that would be throwing these things out. I'm after: - Timber paletts (the kind that bricks and materials arrive on at building sites), I need about 20 more! - Old ropes, any kind or length (could be out of date abseil ropes, or natural fibre etc..), iIneed ~250m total in 5m lengths - Large pieces of canvas/ tough waterproof sheeting, anything bigger than 3m in one direction (could be old marquees, tents etc) I'm happy to pick up any of these items from where they are with a trailer. If anyone who can help could could shoot me an email to dominicwarland@live.com that would be brilliant. I'll keep you updated on the progress. Cheers, Dom Warland Turramurra Rover Crew __________________________________________________________________________ You may have missed this story in the last issue, as it was left off being listed in the subject line and contents - those responsible have been severely dealt with. ED WRAP - NZ MOOT 2010 - HERO MOOT! Early 2010, Simon Milligan, Dave Langron and I threw the idea around of going to the NZ Moot over Easter. It was just an idea, with no real understanding of NZ Rovers. The idea quickly became a reality when the deadline to apply had already passed! A little bit of sweet talking was required; but we secured three spots! Before we knew it, we were booked into go with the Australian Contingent! It was only at this point we discovered that food, tents, transport and pre-Moot accommodation was all provided! All we had to do was organise our flights over there! It then became even sweeter when an offer of a "Post Moot Tour" was presented to us too! (How good is this!) Before we knew it; it was a few days before Easter and we were on a flight bound for Christchurch! (Sorry Dragonskin; might see you next year) The Moot Chief personally picked us up from the airport, drove us to a "Regional Rover Den" (a communal Den that any Rover Crew could use at any time) and left us to adventure! The Den itself was pretty sweet. Pool Table, heaps of couches, a (licenced) Bar, kitchen and heaps of other things to play with. More and more Aussies arrived, and the pre-Moot partying started! Over the next day and a half, groups explored Christchurch at their leisure. Some went on pub crawls, some went Geo-caching, some went sight-seeing, shopping, you name it! It was "free time" - and the Moot hadn't even started yet! Thursday evening, the Region Rover Den had about 80 Rovers from Australia and New Zealand all "waiting patiently" for the Moot to start! The shuttle buses arrived and the crowd rushed to be the "first load" to the Moot site! The Moot sSite was about 15min out of town, at a lovely Scout camp divided by a small creek. (Cold, very cold creek) Friday - Monday is all a bit of a blur! 180 Rovers (40 of them Aussies) were all being Heroes! I discovered quickly that New Zealand Rovers are very different to Australian Rovers. Smaller in numbers, but very passionate, committed to Service and extremely fun! Each Crew took 'Fancy Dress' very seriously, showing us Aussies how to use our imaginations! In a nutshell: Friday - Sporting / Round Robin during the day. "Inner Superheroes" in the Evening. Saturday - Offsite Activities (Tours)... I did the Wine Tour:) "Everyday Heroes" in the Evening. Sunday - Service Project (Extremely rewarding, us Aussies are better builders!)... "Sporting Heroes" and Formal Ball in the Evening! Monday - Recover! For Sydney North Rovers, imagine combining CRAP + Summer Moot + Service Project into one GIANT weekend! It was HUGE! Post Moot, Simon and Dave were lucky enough to get the time off work to say in NZ that extra (week!) longer! A group of Aussies went adventuring across the South Island, skydiving, bungy jumping, jetboat riding, sight-seeing, you name it!! Next Year, 2011, 69th Annual NZ Moot, "SMOOTH MOOT"! I'll be there, will you? Chill!
