As my first year as a Rover it was a great way to celebrate the end of a good year and much talk was had of making next year even better. The hosting restaurant was Gourmet Pizza Kitchen (GPK) in Chatswood, this only chosen because the Genghis Khan Mongolian restaurant had called us not a month before to say, "sorry but we close tomorrow". Thanks guys… so then there was a frantic scramble to find another appropriate restaurant where we could fill our stomachs and there we found GPK. But on the high note there were around 25-30 Rovers attending from Normanhurst, Epping, Brush Park, Kissing Point, Berowra, Mona Vale and Forest Crews. All attending seemed to have a great night with an enormous amount of pizza consumed and very many entertaining conversations to cap of a great year in Sydney North Rovers. Thanks to all who came along and for those that didn’t attend, you certainly missed out on a great night and some really awesome pizza. Sitting in front of the TV wondering why people don't help each other as much these days. Or will you be joining the fight and coming to the annual Region Rover Service Project! If you replied "Yes" then remember to keep May 15/16 free as Sydney North Rovers will be holding our annual region service project - this is on the calendar and always the same third weekend in May - and the one project every year where every Rover from every Crew in the Region is expected to offer whatever time they can to give service - the full weekend or just a few hours. The year we will do some great service work with some real community objectives. (Not just pulling weeds until out sentence is done!) On the Saturday it will be off to Pymble sports ground to plant over 3,000 new trees for bush regeneration and run an information session and BBQ with the council for the community about caring for the nature around parks and public areas. This event will be from 12 am until 8 pm on Saturday and so will be great for those weekend working Rovers On Sunday we will be heading down to Middle Head in Sydney Harbour National Park to work on a section of the Manly to Spit Track and the gateway area to Sydney Harbour National Park, meeting at Forty Baskets Beach at Fairlight at 9am. Full details including an A1 form have been sent to all Crew Leaders and further info will be sent around soon. Contact Aaron Smith on 0432 923 774 or aaron.d.smith@student.uts.edu.au for any queries. So really get your Crew involved and make sure you are there to do your bit. Remember, when you take a bit of effort from 200 Rovers we can really make a difference! __________________________________________________________________________ ROVER INTRO COURSE COMING SOON To kick start our Rover training this year we have a Rover Intro course coming up over two nights in early June, so for all those Rovers, young and old who need to brush up on their knowledge of Rovering and take a first step in Rover leadership training, this is the course for you. The program was originally developed by the RSL & Services Clubs Association 5 years ago, and involved NSW RSL clubs sending a young person from their local community to walk the Track. Expenses covered by ClubsNSW include the cost of flying to Kokoda, as well as accommodation, food, camping equipment, boots and track permits. The intention of the Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge is to identify young people within the community who are potential leaders, and who have an ability to both inspire and educate other young people within their local communities. The program has now been adopted nationally, with state club associations in NSW, the ACT, West Australia and South Australia all funding the cost of at least one young person to walk the Kokoda Track. Candidates are expected to walk the entire Kokoda Track, which at 155km is 59kms longer than the more popular eco-tourist track. ClubsNSW believes that by walking the entire wartime track, young people have an opportunity to gain a greater understanding about a campaign that is rarely discussed in the classroom. More than 2,000 Australian soldiers are buried at the Bomana WarCemetery near Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea. Each group visits the cemetery at the conclusion of their ten day trip, an experience that is as emotionally draining as the walk is physically. Should you be interested in applying for the 2010 program, then please check out http://www.clubsnsw.com.au/kokoda The date for the 2010 program is September 27 to October 8, 2010. __________________________________________________________________________ PM'S AUSTRALIAN YOUTH FORUM CHALLENGE NOW OPEN The Federal Government has just launched the Prime Minister’s Australian Youth Forum (AYF) Challenge, where young people aged 12-24 are invited to submit ideas for projects on how to engage other young people in their community. Winning entries will be provided with funding of up to $15,000 to turn their project into reality. The winning ideas will also be documented on the AYF website. Entries close 5.00pm AEST Tuesday 11 May 2010. For more info and to apply, entrants can visit the PM's AYF Challenge website at http://www.youth.gov.au/ayf/pages/YouthForumChallenge.htm This info has also been posted on the national website at http://www.scouts.com.au/?17164225. Please encourage your members to enter the Challenge – it's an exciting opportunity for Scouts, Venturers and Rovers to turn their ideas into reality and make a difference to their communities as well! __________________________________________________________________________ SCOUT UNIFORM - PANTS POLICY A reminder that the transition period for the NSW "below the waist" uniform policy has ended. This means that your uniform pants should now either be beige or grey. For any clarification, please see the letter from the NSW Chief Commissioner that has been forwarded to all Crew Leaders. __________________________________________________________________________ TIMOR LESTE PROJECT Scouts Australia is developing a partnership with Rotary and Rovers to support the construction of a small building in Timor Leste, either later this year or next year. This is a pilot program with a view to developing an ongoing partnership where Rovers, through Scouts Australia can be directly involved in making a difference for young people in developing countries. The building would be used either for education or first aid and would take between two and three weeks to construct. This is a project which may be of benefit for B-P Award and Scouts of the World Award. I am calling for preliminary expressions of interest from Rovers who would like to be involved to determine the number of Rovers who would care to be part of this Service. Your name, brief reason for being interested and contact details emailed to the address below would suffice at this stage At this time, Rovers would need to meet costs of their travel and accommodation. Financial support is being investigated. Further details are available from Graeme Fordham, email partnerships@scouts.com.au or telephone 0402 598 107.
