CAMP WINDEYER. (Frank Windeyer Memorial Camp)
Where is it?. About midway between Galston Gorge and Berowra Waters on Berowra Creek, 30 hectares of land bordered by Berowra Creek on the east, Still Creek on the south and west and steep hills on the north.
How do I get there? The best approach is by road from the south-west – Dural and Galston - that allows safe parking closest to the camp. Take Galston Road toward Hornsby, 1km past the Galston shops turn into Crosslands road , then 8km to the end at the Crosslands Convention and Field Study Centre, run by the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Take care as there are six hair-pin bends on the last 2km of private road. Using the boom-gate code provided when you book, enter the S.D.A. centre and drive to the river flat area. Follow the “Scout Parking” signs to the S.D.A. tennis courts. The Scout warden’s alarm is here, next to the gate at the edge of Still Creek. Access is by punt about 20 metres across the creek to the camp. Approaching via Summerville Road and ending at the Hornsby Council park on the Eastern side of Berowra Creek appears easy on the map , but getting to Camp Windeyer will be difficult because of sand banks at low tide and no easy way of alerting the warden. Overnight parking can also be hazardous and there is no entry or exit via Summerville Road after dark. The camp is ideal for patrol, troop, group and family camps and a safe overnight stop if patrols using the Great North Walk give advance notice.
Facilities? Camping areas for about 100, each grassed area with dining tables and benches with ridge poles for dining flies, as well as covered cooking shelters. Firewood provided. Town water with three distribution points throughout the camp. Flush toilets. One bush shower – needs enclosure.
Indoor accommodation- a hut with mattresses for 24 cubs on the floor, and a small bunk room for 6 cubs. Up to 16 leaders and helpers bunk beds in two rooms. Solar powered lighting . Dining area for Cubs, separate area for leaders in kitchen. Two gas refridgerator-freezers and a commercial style gas stove. Outdoor covered cooking and eating area adjacent with BBQ (bring own gas bottle) Bush shower with provision for hot water from copper. Flush toilet, campfire circle and outdoor chapel , Resident warden at weekends.
Activities: Challenge course including mud and water, fitness course, compass courses. Swimming, water activities, canoeing (bring your own) and hiking on part of the Great North Walk. Parade ground and area for games.
Need to Know– no A.C, power; take out your own garbage, torches needed at night, resident possums and goannas; some sandflies and mosquitoes, elusive fish and a very timid swamp wallaby. Nearest doctor , religious and shopping services at Galston (10km) Nearest hospital - Hornsby. No Scout activity on the S.D.A side of Still Creek unless previously organized with the Outdoor Centre management.
